I love dogs. All dogs. And as many dog lovers, I detest and I am completely against breed specific legislation. A dog is first and foremost a canine, the breed plays a lesser role than many would like us to believe.
The reason I’m addressing this topic is to give yet another example how misleading and hurtful it is to separate dogs by good or bad breeds.
Last Sunday Rocco and I were enjoying an afternoon on-leash walk, when a greeting with another dog turned awry and Rocco got bit. Guess what? The dog did not belong to any of the demonized breeds…it was an 11month lab. So much for docile, gentle and obedient, this specific dog at that specific moment was neither.
Dog fights and bites happen and I am not here to complain about it. I just thought it is a good story to tell and caution people to think twice about the prejudice and misconception they have towards certain breeds.
Same applies to dogs biting people. I have been bitten by dogs multiple times. All incidents involved a toy breed, expect for one which involved a medium sized mixed breed. I have experienced nothing but love and gentle affection from Pits, Roties or Staffies.
I encourage everyone to do a bit of research, before they rule against a certain breed. A great place to start is the Hug A Bull website were owners and advocates try to defend the most demonized breed of all.
